preBand I was on 200 units insulin/day plus 850 Metformin tid..... my glucose was average 130 and A1c was 6.7~7.4....otherwise known as 'well controlled' diabetic....but at a tremendous intake of meds....which have their own side-effects....
Neither the band surgeon nor my internist could exactly predict what would happen....
postBand my insulin shots fell from 1400 units/week to about 55units/ week....and since you missed this post.....instead of about 1 bottle per WEEK of insulin about 3 weeks ago I finished my FIRST bottle of the entire 2005 year!!! Currently take 850mg Metformin BID....and this likely will decrease soon too...average now is maybe 5-10u insulin injection once a week....maybe twice....BIG improvement...
oh yeah, last lab report shows average BG 121 and A1c 6.1!!!!!!
Be very cautious about your meds and blood glucose....however there is a compensatory metabolic change....as the fast-burning sugars were unavailable via diet restrictions, the lipid pathway which converts stored glycogen (FAT) back into a fuel for normal function.
The 'self-consuming' aspect of glycolosis means my liver is converting those stored cheeseburgers around my belly and heart, into the glucose we need for normal function. On only a FEW occassions did I have to resort to OJ or banana or honey, etc...to repair a 'brown-out' due to low BG....
the statistical likelihood is your BG will normalize as you loose weight....just keep monitoring closely...it doesn't take long for big changes....
cheers and keep us posted....
