question for diabetics?

question for diabetics or those with insulin resistance:

I am very insulin resistant and am taking Actos. I seem to have a problem with hypoglycemic dips. I am wondering how I will be feeling on the liquids stage, and do I need to continue with the Actos while I am having zero to minimal carbs/sugar? I know that these are questions for my doctor, but I swear I like getting advice from people who have "been there done that" better.

(if it makes any difference i am not a sweet eater at all, my highs readings are only around 130-170, but i pump so much insulin that sometimes i will drop to the 40s or 50s. dear doc says that 20% weight loss... will probably have me off meds. )

I love this board! You guys are so wonderful and I cant wait to be banded. I have already learned SO much here.

preBand I was on 200 units insulin/day plus 850 Metformin tid..... my glucose was average 130 and A1c was 6.7~7.4....otherwise known as 'well controlled' diabetic....but at a tremendous intake of meds....which have their own side-effects....

Neither the band surgeon nor my internist could exactly predict what would happen....

postBand my insulin shots fell from 1400 units/week to about 55units/ week....and since you missed this post.....instead of about 1 bottle per WEEK of insulin about 3 weeks ago I finished my FIRST bottle of the entire 2005 year!!! Currently take 850mg Metformin BID....and this likely will decrease soon too...average now is maybe 5-10u insulin injection once a week....maybe twice....BIG improvement...

oh yeah, last lab report shows average BG 121 and A1c 6.1!!!!!!

Be very cautious about your meds and blood glucose....however there is a compensatory metabolic change....as the fast-burning sugars were unavailable via diet restrictions, the lipid pathway which converts stored glycogen (FAT) back into a fuel for normal function.

The 'self-consuming' aspect of glycolosis means my liver is converting those stored cheeseburgers around my belly and heart, into the glucose we need for normal function. On only a FEW occassions did I have to resort to OJ or banana or honey, etc...to repair a 'brown-out' due to low BG....

the statistical likelihood is your BG will normalize as you loose weight....just keep monitoring closely...it doesn't take long for big changes....

cheers and keep us posted....

Hi
check with your doc who has prescribed your medication. I converted to just "coverage" insulin for high blood sugars. The doc took me off the long acting stuff because it can throw you into a really low blood sugar situation.
You are right to ask this question.
