How many grams of Protein?

Hey everyone I'm just about two and half weeks post op. I am just curious how many grams of protein I should be getting everyday. My doc cleared me for mush food... or anything that I can press a fork through, fish, chicken.. finally some "real" food. OK thank for the help!

My nutrition info from my doc says you should be moving from 60-90 grams of protein over the next couple of weeks when you get to the mushie stage.

Of course that may vary from your instructions, but that is what I was told to do when I move to that stage. Hope this helps!

This is something that is very confusing to me... how can you get in 60-90 grams of protein when you are only allowed to eat 3/4 of a cup of food 3 times a day and they don't want you to eat liquid calories? How do you get that much protein from food when you're limited in the amount of food you can have.

I have to get at least 70 calories of food per day. Some days are tougher than others and I have to admit that I sip on a bottle of Isopure Zero Carb drink many days to get it in since the bottle is 40 grams of protein. I'm trying to make cream soups and Cream of Wheat with nonfat milk or add unflavored protein powder to help boost the protein. Greek Yogurt has 22 grams of protein per serving and lean cuts of beef are generally high in protein too.

I am planning on seeing my nutritionist when I get my first fill to discuss getting enough calories and protein.

Here is a formula to determine how much protein you need...based on pounds.

Ideal weight divided by 2.2
Multiply by 1.25

It is just about impossible to get all your proteins and/or all your liquids the first few weeks after surgery. That's okay....just try to add a little every day and you will eventually get there. (Remember that the liquid protein drinks count toward your liquid requirements, too). Do keep sipping the liquids, tho....you definitely do not want to get dehydrated - it's dangerous.

My doctor said to get at least 60 grams of protein a day. You could add unflavored protein powder to foods and another thing that I do is add fat free dried milk to yogurts and Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast. This will help you reach the goal of 60 grams a day.

alright great! I'm keeping a food journal to keep myself aware of my intake. I really don't have that much restriction just yet and I am able to eat soft foods. thanks for the help.
