Carbonation...

Let me first apologize in advance for any stupid questions I may ask. I am new to this site and a pre-op patient. I have become addicted to all the great postings and have found myself reading them daily. I have been on a mission to collect as many opinions as possible. It's helpful to be able to hear how different things affect different people....so thank you to all that have posted!

I wanted ask people what their experiences and thoughts were on carbonation.....I have an ulterior motive as I am attending a wedding in Napa Valley at the end of October and have a passion for the bubbley! My surgery date is Aug 23.....
My dietician, of course, says no way no how should anyone be drinking anything carbonated.....which I am fine with, but I was hoping someone could throw me a bone!

Take some more time and try the fantastic Search function here (on the blue tool bar near the top of every page), I like to use Advanced Search and then search for keywords (the one on the left) in Thread Titles Only (pull down menu below the keyword box) for whatever I'm interested in. I'd suggest for this topic you search for the following terms:
carbonation
carbonated
Diet Coke
Soda
Pop
Bubbly

I know that many surgeons say no way no how, and that lots of folks do it anyway. What I have noticed in my time here has been that many people find that after banding they simply have NO interest in anything bubbly anymore. It is true, your taste buds change. I know you are probably talking about Sparkling Wine (not really Champagne unless it's from that region in France, after all :) ) and whether or not you can have it a couple of months out. I cannot tell you to go against your Nut's advice, but I will say that one glass that you SIP probably would be fine.

That having been said, there is no way I'd drink any right after it has been poured. You need to let it sit until it stops fizzing as much.

As far as the sparkling wine was concerned...... I was speaking of champagne....I have a bottle from "that region" in my fridge as we speak. The ring bearer and his family are coming in for the wedding from France.....and the bride and groom met in Paris. So most likely we will be drinking the "real" thing! Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed very fine sparkling wines...but I my personal fave is a champagne! Cheers!

....I was a very BIG fan of various 'live' waters....but my tastes DID change....and now any of those carbonated (WHICHEVER the source) fluids just aren't enticing....the previously desirable acidic flavor of the CO2 simply does not fit my postBand palette....

Along with the change in preferences of flavor, I'm pleased to experience the notion my enjoyment of such social events are no longer measured by the quantities of what I eat or drink....a 'New Freedom' if you will...

and a literal 'taste' really DOES go a long way....

DW has wine from time to time in the evening....I don't even care for the smell of it anymore...so it isn't a chore to leave that out of my diet...

I agree that taste does go along way! It will be interesting to see how my tastes change. Perhaps I will no longer enjoy champagne at all.......oh now that thought makes me a little sad...lol

Something to consider...

After surgery you will essentially have a big stomach and a little stomach. Right?

During surgery the surgeons sews the big stomach up and over the band. This leaves a pocket at the top of your big stomach where it is pulled up and over the band.

When you drink carbonation the gas passes through your stoma (band) and this gas rises. It collects in that pocket and it HURTS! It's really quite painful, it feels like ... gas pains. ;)

For people that have no restriction they don't seem to have a problem with it but for those that have restriction it can be quite painful. Yeah, don't ask me how I know that one. Heh...

It's up to you. People claim it will harm your pouch, I don't agree that it does. Your stomach is not an enclosed system, there are holes above and below your band and the gas will eventually go somewhere. But if you have restriction your stoma tends to act as a one way valve and if you don't burp, it WILL come out the other end. Not really overly flattering at a formal event. ;)
