can't throw up

Hey guys,

I have notice when im not feeling well and are nauseated (?) I think I have a virus...I can dry heave and gag all day long but nothing except maybe a little saliva comes up. It hurts really badly to do this I have thought it was normal but I want to get your opinions.

Banded 7/31/07 Dr. Marsden in Ft. Worth
3 fills still hungry not an once of restriction but its just not financially reasonalbly to get another just yet.

Thanks

I got a virus not long after banding (or food poisoning). It took more dry heaves till I actually threw up, you can feel vomit trying to get UP through the band.. apparently this is NO easy feat. And it's painful :(

You need to take anti-nausea meds, because you don't want to vomit with the band. Emetrol is the best IMO, anytime I get nausea, I take a swig and the nausea goes away instantly. It's liquid, over the counter at any drug store.

In the 5 years since ive had the band, Ive had food poisoning/stomach flus a couple of times and never ever have I been able to throw up the contents of my 'lower' stomach. I just keep heaving over the toilet and just a little saliva comes out. What ive noticed is that it takes longer for us to get that bad stuff out of our system because it cant come up and out. Ad yes anti-nausea meds is great..if you can stop heaving long enough for it to pass your band.

I have to concur with Paulax and the others...just got over a flu bug and my poor son and mother thought I was dying I had the dry heaves so bad. Nothing would come up through the band.

THEN last night (stupid, stupid Becky, will I EVER learn??) I ate my pork chop too fast, too big, too dry and yes, big stick!! I'm happy to say after learning up close and personal what sliming is, I tried the pineapple juice trick. HALLELUIAH! It worked and I was so happy.

Today I'm taking it slow, slow, slow.

But I too was worried about harming my band or making it slip I was heaving SO hard. I see my doc next week, so I'll ask him about it.

I'm so glad for your post becky. I'm being banded on Tuesday and when I stocked up on liquids, I included some little pineapple juices just for that perfect occasion. I"m hoping never to need it, but it seems to work so well for everyone. In Australia, there aren't medications you can buy over the counter for nausea, so I will ask my GP for a prescription for it so I have some on hand.

Apple juice does the trick for me when I get stuck. Lucky I haven't needed to throw up since my first 2 days of surgery... I threw some tablets I took.

I wonder what happens if you get drunk and have to puke. I rarely drink, but I have friends who drink a lot... does liquid stuff come back up easily?

Greeneyez:

Good luck with your banding! You will love being a fellow bandster! It's a totally new world (and there are some perils now and then) but it sounds like you are preparing yourself for a positive experience!

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks Becky, I"m ready to leave the past behind me. Kathleen, I think when other bandsters get food stuck, which apparently causes immense pain, they drink some pineapple juice which helps it to move. Please tell me if I'm wrong guys!

If food is stuck and it won't go down any other way, then the juice helps. I guess it's because the texture of the juice let's it slide down. I'm not sure if that is the reason I just know it works.
