A new question

At my pre-surgery H&P my primary care doctor wished me luck - however told me that even with this surgery that I would not able to lose more than 100 lbs and that I was going to still have a high BMI.

Talk about letting the air out of a balloon...

Anyway - I've read multiple stories of people losing 100+ plus with LB....

My g/f thinks maybe she's stating that I won't lose over 30% of my body weight - but that still doesn't fit in with testimonials I've seen and read.

Just wondering if anyone else has faced this - I can't decide if she was throwing it out as a challenge of sorts or what...

Haven't had a follow-up with her yet - am definately going to talk about it with my surgeon this week.

Two more sleeps!!!

hello how are you wtg on being banded.
first off that is not true you will lose as much weight as the effort you put forth. its understandable for family to say things like that cause maybe they dont really understand what or how the band works. as far as your doctor is concerned maybe he dont understand how the band works either . the band is not a quick fix you will not lose it over night it will take time to lose what you want. But it can happen. this band is a tool that will retrain you how to eat and what to eat as well. and it helps you lose the weight. but remember you have to make the effort. learn to read labels. make sure your meals are high protien that will help you stay full longer and help you get full faster there for you will lose weight. also low fat low cal foods and low carbs as well and drink lots of water or crystal light. if you like tea as long as its decaf tea and change from sugar to splenda. YOU CAN DO THIS. dont let no one tell you different. OH YEAH LOTS OF EXCERCISE!!!! 30 minutes a day minimum. hope this helped!!!! im a month banded and i have lost 35 pounds good start but now that im on regular solid foods it will slow a bit. and eat until your either tired of eating or full. i eat a cup of food 3 times a day and 1 snack before bed. i eat until food is cold then i stop. i drink water non stop. and remember chew chew chew before you swallow.

How much you lose is up to you. Thetre are lots of rules abd if you follow them and get fills when need them, there is no reason you can't be slim someday.

thanks so much for the confidence and support.

I literally felt like she punched me in the gut - wind out right out of me.

I agree - what I put into it is what I will get out of it. I am so committed to being the person who is inside this shell. :)

I was told almost the same thing, and my doc asked me to consider GB, but I had no intention of getting my plumbing rearranged! What my doc was quoting are averages of various reports on the weight loss of however-many individuals. I think averages are total BS anyway, they don't tell you anything. My doc did admit that anyone can certainly "beat the averages" with a good diet and exercise.

Don't let that discourage you from moving forward if this is the procedure you want to pursue, Good luck to you and don't give up!

You can lose as much as you want with LB. There's no window like there is with many of the other WLS. I am already down 159 lbs and want to lose another 55. It's coming off slowly now and I have really bumped up the exercise but I know I will get there even if it takes another 2 years.

Our GP's usually know diddly about any WLS let alone the band. I have been educating mine since he thought I would fail at this "diet" too. I make him eat his words every time he sees me and I just keep losing weight.

Of course you can lose it all if you want -- the band can help you all the way to goal. It's going to take a lot of hard work and a long time, but we're all in it for the long haul anyway, right?

You can do it!

(and notice that I have every intention of losing 159 lbs myself. I am not going to stop at the -100 mark! It's just taking me awhile. :D)

I felt the same way about hearing that after 15 years, people had gained back 50% of their weight. Today I realized that that is some poeple, not all, and that I don't "have" to gain it back, that part is up to me. I think that not losing the weight and gaining it back are the 2 scariest things for me, but it is all up to me, it's not someone saying "ok, your done"

Hey - Like most people on this forum, I was surprised and disappointed to hear this too. Specifically my program says that most people will lose and keep off 55% - 65% of their excess weight.

Let's say you were starting at 400 and your "ideal weight" was 200. You would have 200 lbs of excess weight and would lose about 120 of that and keep it off on average.

For me, that the averages say I will end up at 280. Does that suck? Well yes, kind of, but would my life (Mobility, health, energy) be 100% better than it is today? YES!

It is true that this is an average. That means some people who are motivated and work hard will beat it. In fact, we have some of those inspirational people here to prove it. But it also means, some people will not make it that far.

I don't say this to discourage anyone. On the contrary, I see it as a rally cry. I know each and every one of us is above average and can do better than 60%. With that being said, I think it makes sense to ask yourself if 60% is enough improvement to go through with this lifestyle change.

For me it is... but I still expect to do better than average :)

John
