Phyllser: Hi: The Toronto clinic referred me to a new surgeon named Dr. R. Woodhead. He had been trained to do the band by my surgeon. So after an initial consultation fee he accepted me as a patient. I now pay $75.00 per fill. A lot cheaper than flying to Toronto for a "free" fill. Go for the treadmill. It is a terrific machine to have when you are not doing other exercises. I take aquafit but have been home with a viral cough so I use the treadmill. Love it but exercise is like everything do only the one thing and you get bored. Also the muscles need a new challenge in order to keep burning calories. I am told that doing the same exercise challenges only certain muscles and a plateau could occur. So by using different muscles the caloric burning increases. Oh, I also have arthritis in the knees, but if you keep the level at 0 or 1 and don't go too fast your knees should be OK. Sounds good anyway.
Bimby you will be fine. Your surgeon, clinic are there for your medical needs and we are here for support. One thing about us over 60's, as stated by IKgrubb we have been through all the diets, exercise gimicks etc. Good luck and keep us informed. Doddie

Bimby - I am 60 and just had surgery on 3-14. We bounce back very well!! The first two days were hard for me because of gas pains, but that third day was a big step up. I felt really good, and then when I hit the one week mark, I was my old self again. I think it was pretty amazing how quickly I bounced back. You will do get. Best wishes.

Hi Bimby, I'm closer to 70 than I am to 60 and I did great recovering. I stayed over one night. Then I spent 2 nights at a nearbye (to the hosp) hotel just because I drove myself and wanted to be clear headed when I drove home. I loved the stay at the hotel. I'm wondering now if it was because I was so high on pain meds that it seemed so comfortable! LOL Anyway by the time I drove home I felt fine. Didn't need anymore pain meds except liquid tylenol for the little bit of gas pain I still had. You will do just fine!

Nice to see more people joining in. That way I can know what to expect when it's my turn. Keep the news coming.
I have my eye on when I'll have my Banding, but no date yet. Still waiting for CMMC in Jackson, MS to recieve thier "Seal of Excelents" from Medicare. Something should happen by the end of May.

Don

PS: Nailing Jello to a tree, that was a good one. LOL

lap band for 60+

I need to know if anyone has dealth with Health Net Insurance? I was approveds for bariatriic surgery. Surgeon said I should have lap band, as other has 5% dealth rate per studies. Now I am told that the surgeon at the hospital I was assigned to, does not accept health net. It seems no one at the hospital has an answer for me, including case manager at health net insurance.
Would appreciate if someone can provide info on this.l Actually, the lap band was what I originally wanted, and kind of was talked out of by hospital staff.d
thanks,
Nora

Phyl,
Good for you. Keep up the great effort. I get banded in September. Have to prove to the insurance that I am committed enough. See the trainer three times a week and the nutritionist twice a month. September will come soon. You look wonderful.

Hi,
I'm Pam, 63 and a newbie to all this, being banded (2/4/08) and writing message board. Help, help! How do I get a weight loss ticker that I created on that web site to move to my info here? also my picture. I have a little 'thumbnail' but can't get it to move. Is there a special page I need to go to?

I'm in Great Falls, MT. Had my surgery done by Dr. David Rohrer. (406-771-8411) He is fantastic! People from all over MT come to have him do their bypass and Lap Band. This is the 5th surgery he has performed on me (bowel obstructions & hernia repair.) He's a wonderful surgeon!

I'm glad there is a place for 60-ish folks to go.

I'm having a hard time taking smaller bites and eating slowly. Why does my stomach get full so quickly on some things and not on others? I've actually gotten sick to my stomach 4 times. Need to get a handle on this NOW. advice?

Sorry, my mind just hops from one thing to the next and I know it's kind of hard to follow me.

Thanks,
Pam

Help!

Hi Guys, I really need a boost. Went for my first fill and it went fine but when I stepped on the scale after 2 months I had only lost a total of 12 lbs since surgery.
I am excercising 3 times a week, 1 1/2 hours per time, watching protein 70 grams per day, 3 meals only, trying to get water increased, no snacking. What is going on?
I am really being good, not even hungry, sometimes have to force myself to eat .

Wow Karen, I'm impressed. Don't give up, you're doing SO great!!! Maybe it just takes a while for someone with your extra metabolism to kick in.
I had a good loss at first but then I was in the hospital for about 2 1/2 weeks with pneumonia and they fed me just regular food and dummy me, ate it. Since my inital loss, I've lost 2 lbs. but now I've gained it back. I don't exercise, except bed to bathroom to living room to TV.
Please don't give up, just hang in there. My Dr. told me that Lap Band weight comes off slower than bypass.
Keep up your good work,
Pam

Hi Karen, Is it possible you aren't getting enough calories. I have read about some people that were stuck at a weight until they added a couple hundred more cals. Also have read that you should not routinally eat the same things at the same times.. Maybe have breakfast at night, dinner in the AM once in awhile. Something about your body adjusting to routine and maintaing status quo. Good luck to you. I'm sure those pounds will eventually come off.

I am going to contact the Nutritionist at the Bariatric Center I used to see what they say. They were adamant about getting over 60 grams of protein a day and forget calories, my calories are averaging about 900 a day now but with the fill I am sure that this will go down. Dr. said again yesterday, 3 meals a day no more then 20 minutes in duration, no more then a cup or when full, and increase my water.
Will let you all know what nutritionist says.
Already am having trouble of thinking about food, could this be " anerioxa" Bad joke!

Pam,
I am working with a nutritionist right now and she is having me work on small bites and taking more time to eat. So, I have started eating with those plastic baby spoons that you can now buy in a package at Walmart. It helps me remember to take smaller portions. One meal a day, I really concentrate on taking many chews.

Karen,
12 pounds is wonderful. Just think, that is 72 pounds in one year. Everyone tells me that it starts slowly. But you must remember, if you take it off fast, it might all come back. Celebrate the 12 pounds. I know what you mean about exercise and water. Keep up the great work. It will pay off in time.
