Chiropractic adjustsments

Has anyone had chiropractic adjustments after healing from Lap Band surgery? Any problems? I hope to be banded in the next few months and am under a chiropractor's care for a back problem.

Papahemi:

Congratulations on your health care choices.

I have had adjustments following my own surgery with great results.

I am a chiropractor. While modification and alternative techniques may be indicated for a short period depending on your personal variables, appropriate choices of treatment is part of the training.

cheers on your journey

I have not told my doc that I have had the surgery as he is quite anti medical. As a chiro doc do you think this is an error on my part? Especially as to adjustments.

I don't believe in chiropractors.

I started seeing one about 5 months ago. I lost about 130 pounds before I went to see him. It's been great. He was pretty baffled about the lap band at first. He had a ton of questions for me too. But its been a great experience. I would recommend it.

Being "anti medical" or "anti chiropractic" is not part of my own conceptual universe.

There are plenty of health issues that need more than one perspective and approach for maximal result.
My own focus is on spinal biomechanics and the science of structure as related to function. That differs from 'surgery and pharmaceuticals' as an answer to certain health issues.

No discipline has all the answers for all the problems. I'm glad we have choices.

whether you believe in them or not, they still exist!
I went to an orthopedic doc for a work injury in my back. I had steroid injections, physical therapy, and muscle relaxers. I just couldn't get any relief. I decided to go to a chiropractor...what the heck...I tried everything else. It was the first time I had relief!

It may be uncomfortable on your belly while you are healing. I would let him know about your Lap Band. He may find another position for you during the adjustment.

Thanks all for the quick response. The reason I ask is my current chiropractor uses the Gonstead method and is working to improve disc problems at T10 and T11. This puts a pretty good adjustment in my abdomen area but he knows that I am doing the band, so we will discuss after the surgery. He is not anti-medical and has helped me quite a bit to increase my mobility and decrease my back pain. I have been able to get off the narcotic pain meds because of him. My only alternative was spinal fusion surgery. That was not an option with me. Again thanks to all who gave a constructive comment.

Gonsteaders typically use a knee-chair adjusting device for this type of procedure. While the adjustment procedure itself is otherwise safe and comfortable, your early recovery phase and proximity of port and surgical incisions may require alternate techniques for a while.
