Passport needed??

DH just brought up a question, seeing as how I will have to be ready to just jump on a plane at the last minute when it is time to have my surgery.

Do I need to have a passport to get in and out of mexico by plane? Or will my birth certificate do fine?

Passport, driver's license... state certified birth certificate... two of those should do. That's what you need to cruise from the US into Mexico, and what we needed last time we drove across the border (granted it was a while ago).

Wait, I take that back... it was a passport OR original state certified birth certificate and driver's license (or state issued ID).

I was told until Dec. 31, 2006, I only needed my D.L. and my birth certificate... Best to call the Dr's office where you are having your surgery and see.

Your better off getting a passport! My first trip to Mex I took my birth cert and almost didn't get on the plane. I had to have an emergency afidavid (to prove that the birth cert was really me) by a notery right at the airport that cost me $20 cash.

Dang, our cruise was in 95 so I wasn't sure I was remembering that correctly. Looked it up for you:

Quote:
Bring Identification to Mexico

You will need a combination of a birth certificate *and* driver's license or other state-issued photo id, or a passport only, to visit Mexico. If using a birth certificate as identification, you must have the original, with an embossed state seal.

Do I need a passport to visit Mexico in 2006 and 2007? You don't need a passport to visit Mexico by air until January 1, 2007. If traveling by land, you don't need a passport to visit Mexico until January 1, 2008.

We go to Mexico quite a bit. We use our DL and Birth Certificate, no problems. If you are married, you also need to bring a copy of your marriage certificiate for the name change on the birth certificate.

My husband and son drove to Mexico a few weeks ago. They had passports. However, it isn't required yet. In a few years you will be required to have a passport to go into the interior.

Here's a link, from the state dept., that will give you the info. required...
Mexico.

According to the official website.....Quoted....

"On effective dates below, all travelers to or from the Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda will be required to have a passport or other document that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States. On December 31, 2006, the requirement will be applied to all air and sea travel to and from Bermuda, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Mexico, and Canada. On December 31, 2007, the requirement extended to all air, sea, and land border crossings. For more information or to confirm effective dates, visit the State Department’s consular web site www.travel.state.gov or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s web site at www.dhs.gov. "

"U.S. citizens who travel to a country where a valid U.S. passport is not required will need documentary evidence of their U.S. citizenship and identity. Proof of U.S. citizenship includes an expired U.S. passport or an original birth certificate. A certified copy of the birth certificate is also acceptable, but it must have the registrar’s signature and a raised, impressed, embossed, or multicolored seal. If you were born abroad, a Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship, or Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States will suffice. To prove identity, a valid driver’s license or government identification card are acceptable provided they identify you by physical description or photograph. However, for travel overseas and to facilitate reentry into the U.S., a valid U.S. passport is the best documentation available and unquestionably proves your U.S. citizenship."

"MEXICO - *Proof of citizenship such as original birth certificate, naturalization certificate or voters registration card and photo ID. Tourist card is required. Tourist card valid 3 months for single entry up to 180 days, $20 fee, requires proof of U.S. citizenship, photo ID, and proof of sufficient funds. Visa not required of U.S. citizens for tourist/transit stay of up to 30 days. Obtain tourist cards in advance from Consulate, Tourism Office, and most airlines serving Mexico upon arrival. Departure tax $10 is paid at airport when not included in the cost of the airline ticket. Notarized consent from parent(s) required for children under age 18 traveling alone, with one parent, or in someone else’s custody. For additional information, check with the Embassy of Mexico, 1911 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20006 (202/736-1000) or nearest Consulate General: AZ (602/242-7398), CA (213/351-6800, 415/392-5554 and 619/231-8414), CO (303/331-1110), FL (305/716-4977), GA (404/266-1913), IL (312/855-1380), LA (504/522-3596), NY (212/217-6400), PR (809/764-0258) or TX (210/227-1085, 214/630-7341, 713/542-2300, 512/478-9031 and 915/533-4082). Just came back from Mexico yesterday. They ONLY checked driver's license and ASKED if I was a citizen. I did have a certified birth certificate on me, but they didn't want to see it.

By December 2007 all travel will require a passport. Better off just getting one now before the BIG rush hits.
