Question how long was YOUR stay....

...in the hospital?

Appt with 'pre-admission' and the nurse tells me they 'often do 2 nights...the surgeon's office says often it is release same day.... :guess :guess :guess :guess :glasses :cross-eye :think

so...given the variables, what is the experience for the members here assembled???

Hi Jack,

I went in with every intention of leaving the same day... unfortunately I was pretty sick from the anesthsia and wasn't able to leave until the next morning. If it hadn't been for that... I could have probably left the same day. I haven't heard of anyone having to stay 2 nights... I know I would have been bouncing off of the walls if they hadn't let me out the next day. :) There is just no place like home.

I stayed overnight, and I am glad I did! I had every intention of coming home the same day and decided to stay.

The nurse from Blue Cross/Blue Shield told me I was "approved" for an overnight stay. Every other time I had laparoscopic surgery (gallbladder removal, cyst removal), I stayed until the next morning, which is what the insurance covers for "same day" surgery. The hospital charges the insurance company for 24 hours regardless of when you leave (my mother-in-law works at a hospital).

I was really shocked when my doctor's office told me I was having surgery at 7:30 and would "probably" be going home around 1:00. I actually ended up leaving at 3:30 pm, but it was very tough because the anesthesia made me very nauseated and I had just started vomitting before I had to leave, and I do get motion sickness.

But once I was at home, I think it was a lot easier being at home than at the hospital, and I wasn't very groggy from the anesthesia, possibly because I rejected the sedative and didn't take morphine or percoset (makes me sick and I already felt sick!).

So, the short of it is that I think if YOU feel you need to stay overnight, you should. Two nights is unlikely. But if you can get home, chances are you'll be able to rest better. Every time I've stayed overnight at the hospital, I've roomed with some elderly lady who I am sure is very very sweet when she's not sick but who makes sleep impossible and not to mention nurses keep coming in with that electronic blood pressure cuff that feels like it's going to amputate my arm.

Violet - My Doctor uses private rooms for all his patients, so I didn't have any one in there with me. I didn't think of that aspect of it. It was just nice not to worry about getting up and going to the potty or fixing anything. I guess each circumstance would be different. I know a lot of the doctors are letting patients go home the same day now. I guess it is something each person needs to discuss with the doctor. Thanks for sharing that side of the story.

Jack, I stayed two nights. But this is definitely not the norm!

I just wanted to get my $$ worth. LOL

I honestly would not have felt like coming home, having problems, going back through the ER (sitting there for hours), --just to get back into my hospital bed.

I stayed overnight - which was still considered 'outpatient' (anything under 23hrs.) - both times.

In at 6:30 a.m., home by 1:30. This is the same doctor Shrinking Violet used, and their normal procedure is indeed in and out the same day.

Funny, in Mexico I had to stay two nights though I would have been more than happy to leave after one night. I hate hospitals... Actually the hospital I stayed in seemed more comfortable than local hospitals in Oregon but I was bored spitless. I was always wandering around the place. I balled like crazy when the doctor wouldn't let me leave. I guess they like to be safer than sorry... Teresa

I had my band done in Lyon France.
My surgeon has all his patients admitted the night before surgery and will not allow them to be discharged for a further 2 night after surgery has taken place. So i was admitted on the 5th at 5pm and was discharged on the 8th at 1pm after a full leg massage to help prevent any clots forming in them. Seems that this is the norm in as i have spoken to other patients of his and they all had a three night stay too
Love Tracey

In at 11am on a Friday, Out at 1:30pm on Saturday. I had a private room, too. If I was rooming with someone, I would have wanted to go home on Friday for sure! Jack is it possible that your other medical issues would make them want to keep you for an extra night?

Good deal. They should be able to let you know more about what to expect at your consult. I'll be thinking about you, Teresa

stay as long as possible

Hi, I had my surgery in Monterrey, MX. I got to to stay 2 nights. I felt fine after the first night but it was good I stayed because the IV really helped keep me hydrated. It is also good to have the nurses around.
