This sounds like an amazing concept. Can you share location, surgeon info, hospital/surgery center affiliation, phone number, website for this?

City: Fort Worth State: Texas...A Whole Other Country! | My thought would be "no". Here is part of the fine print: My Lap Band Surgery is a Non-Profit Org. The Tickets Sold 10% of the
proceeds will go toward the E-Fund, to help others fight obesity and get the
surgery at miniual cost or no charge at all. For more information about the E-Fund
Call 1-386-446-0027 during normatl business hours or email advancedbp@cfl.rr.com WASA, you are the perfect person to verify the legitimacy of this NPO. Are you up for it?

Sheesh.... | I hear ya...I saw all that, but with the exception of pricing. Do you have a link to that $8,000 quote?

Non profit my butt....
Let's say they get $20,000. From that subtract:
$8,000 for surgery as they would anyone (they are making a profit)
$1,000 for food (and you know that is high)
$200 for luggage (and you know that is high too)
$2000 for the "non profit donation to themselves"
That means they are charging $16,800 for an $8,000 surgery.
Wow... what a deal!
You know what makes me angry about this? All but one will lose the deal. That means they have to come up with an additional $200 to pay for their own surgery. Knowing what people do to come up with surgery money such as dumpster diving and selling treasures on ebay, refinancing their homes, etc. And someone takes advantage of that by selling expensive surgery that there is so little chance they will win.
People are desperate for this surgery. It's just not right.

City: Fort Worth State: Texas...A Whole Other Country! | ImADucky...don't know if it is technically legit, but it is certainly morally questionable.
So glad you piped in, WASA...thank you.

City: Cordova/Memphis State: TN | Hey Texas!
I definitely agree on the "morally questionable" aspect - WASa broke it down pretty good. Looks like another scheme to profit on others misfortune and ignorance. Is this something that could be reported to the BBB?

They are in Mexico, do they have a BBB there?
People need to be aware, they have a 1% chance of winning a band.

State: Arizona | Just an update:
The doctor, Dr. Ramos Kelly is a Mexican doctor in Tijuana. It appears the coordinators are in the US and the website claiming Tax Exempt status is owned by someone in the US.
According to the IRS they are not tax exempt, not by a long shot. The claim that they are "not for profit" does not appear to be true.
I got to thinking that there could be an explanation so according to the laws as explained by a US Gov't website the website has to furnish (to anyone who asks) a copy of a letter provided by the IRS explaining they are tax exempt (not for profit). I emailed the CEO/CFO of the website asking for a copy of that letter and thus far, he is declining to provide this. He wants proof of my identity before he will do so. Not sure if he wants my drivers license or what. ;o) BTW, this is something he cannot do. He can't refuse to provide this letter because he doesn't have my drivers license.
I believe it is safe to say it's not darn likely he has that proof of being a non profit organization.
