Choosing a Doctor
As a nurse I did a lot of research before I decided to choose a doctor. Asking questions like how many bariatric surgeries they've done, what kind of complications did they have, how many people ended up not being successful, did any patients end up with further hospitalizations and if so why, did anyone need to stop eating completely and go on intravenous nutrition to complications. My physician was able to answer all those questions. I also worked in the community with patients and found that I was constantly taking care of "botched" surgeries from a physician from the "other" hospital and no one ever came our way from Hartford Hospital. I was working with the visiting nurses group associated with the hospital so I would be getting those clients.
Go to the support group meetings, they are key in making a decision. These are people who have already had surgeries and are very willing to share. Last but not least, google your physician and look on the public health department webpage from the state he is licensed. This will tell you if there were any disciplinary actions, what they were and if he had ever been sued.
Hope this helps
Sharon:)
